According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention suicide is the third-highest cause of death for people ages 15 to 24 years old, and the fourth-highest cause of death among children ages 10 to 14 years old. More teenagers and young adults die of suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic lung disease combined.
In 1998 30,575 Americans died because of suicide.
Males commit suicide four times as often as females, but however females are more likely to attempt suicide.
Nearly 3 of 5 suicides are committed with a firearm (58%)
There are twice as many deaths due to suicide than death due to HIV/Aids.
The highest suicide rates were for white men over 85 (65/100000)
Suicide rates are generally higher than the national average in the western states and lower in the eastern and Midwestern states.
More people die from suicide than from homicide.
Over the last 25 years teen suicide has increased 300%
There are estimated 8-25 attempted suicides to one completion, (the ratio is higher in woman and youth and lower in men and the elderly)
(information from CDC and NIMH / National Institute of Mental Health)

Women and Suicide
Every 90 minutes a woman takes her life in the U.S and every 78 seconds a woman attempts suicide.
Suicide is more common among women who are single, recently separated, divorced or widowed. That doesn't mean that every women who is not married will commit suicide, it's just a statistic.
Woman attempt suicide twice as often as men, one reason for that is that much more women suffer from depression than men.
The suicide rates for women peak between the ages of 45-54 years old and again after age 75. Even thought the ages from 10-18 don't have the highest rates, girls in that age are first confronted with many new problems and it's very important for them to get support.
