Why are women more prone to depression then men?

Biological Reasons

  • Hormonal fluctuations-

    • PMS
    • Pregnancy
    • Post-pregnancy
    • Miscarriage
    • Pre-menopause
    • Menopause

Social Reasons

  • Family responsibilities- stress from taking care of the kids; cleaning and cooking etc.
  • Stress from work- working long days and being tired from it
  • Domestic violence-sexual, verbal, and physical abuse.
  • Alsthe roles and expectations of women in general
  • Adolescence-many women with clinical depression were diagnosed in their teen years

What about the men?

First, I want to point out that when trying to look up for men and depression, I came to the conclusion that there are not a lot of information on men and depression. Actually, I really saw more information on women and depression then men.

Some Statistics and facts that you might want to know

spacershape   In the U.S. alone, 3 to 4 million men are affected byspacerdepression
spacershape   Men who suffer from depression have a 71% chance ofspacerdeveloping heart disease
spacershape   Men are 8 times as likely to commit suicide then women

Why do men feel they have to end there life instead of seeking for help?

Men have been taught that going for help is being weak or "girly." Men have also been taught to be tough, strong, fearful and etc. Sometimes they are told to "take it like man" and "boys don't." In the book I Don't Want To Talk About It the author explains how men feel about depression. In an interview with the author, Terrence Real, he explains that

"The main point [about depression in men] is this: men are just as feelingful, just as relational, just as connected, just as dependent, just as needy, as women are."
Men who suffer from depression are less likely to admit to depression and sometimes are less likely to be diagnosed as being depressed by their doctors. Some men have the tendency to cover their depression by using alcohol or drugs or through cover up behaviors such acting tough, being angry, irritable, and/or discouraged. These reasons may cause one to not seek help even though they may or may not know they have depression.
