Drugs: Why or Why Not?
The best way to decide how you feel about drugs is to get more information about them. This means (partly) statistics, pamphlets, and information on what drugs do, but information also means talking to other people about drugs. Talk to your friends, your parents or another adult you respect, your doctor, or therapist, or pastor, or counselor. Try finding someone who is willing to tell you honestly about his or her drug use - the good parts and the bad parts. Think about it, and remember that no matter what your friends are doing, their decisions are their decisions, but your decision is your decision.
Why Do Teens Use Drugs?
- To feel good, physically and emotionally
- Because their friends use drugs
- To enjoy music or dancing more
- To escape problems or boredom
- To be rebellious
- To experiment
Some Things To Think About
- If you're caught with illegal drugs, you can go to prison.
- Highs are unpredictable; they can be good or bad.
- You can never be sure what's in a drug, how big the dose is, or whether the maker has mixed it with other drugs.
- The higher the high, the lower the low.
- Drugs can cause permanent physical and mental damage, and can aggravate or trigger mental illnesses.
- Drugs can kill, even the first time.
- Drugs can be addictive, even the first time.
Some Ways To Say No
"I don't have to take drugs to enjoy myself."
"I don't know what's in that and I don't know how that will affect me."
"I can't take that because I'm on medication."
Your friends should never pressure you into doing something you don't want to do.
