What Is It?
Methamphetamines, also known as meth, ice or crank, are stimulants that are sold as pills, capsules, crystals or powders. Ice is a smokable, crystalline form of meth that produces a more intense high. The effects may last from 8 to 24 hours. When the drug does wear off, the crash, or low feeling, can be more intense and longer lasting than the crash from cocaine or heroin. All forms of this drug are addictive.
Short-Term Effects of Methamphetamines
- Increased alertness and feeling of well-being
- Increased heart rate
- Loss of appetite
- Increased body temperature
- Paranoia
- Convulsions, numbness, slurred speech or uncontrollable twitches
- Aggressive or violent behavior
Long-Term Effects of Methamphetamines
- Kidney, lung, liver or brain damage
- Depression, insomnia or hallucinations
- Weight loss or malnutrition
- Less resistant to disease
- Behavior resembling schizophrenia
- Stroke
- Death
