It'll All Be Over Soon
She stumbles down the dark hallway
The carpet is thick and warm against her feet.
But all she feels is cold.
No matter…
It'll all be over soon
She half crawls, half falls into the bathroom
The tile is cold, and the light is bright and harsh.
The tears she'd been holding back forever flow forth.
No matter…
It'll all be over soon.
As hot tears pour down her cool face,
She reaches for the medicine cabinet.
If anyone cared, she thought, they'd stop her.
No matter…
It'll all be over soon.
She had been blundering through life for months,
Bewildered by everyone's hatred.
Even her own hatred.
No matter…
She hated her parents, for everything they'd never done.
For never being there when it counted.
For never loving her.
No matter…
It'll all be over soon.
She hated her used-to-be friends
For betraying her to the monsters of life.
For abandoning her to wander alone.
No matter…
It'll all be over soon.
She reached into the medicine cabinet,
Pulled out her sleeping pills.
People said she had bad dreams, and that's why she couldn't sleep.
To her, life was a bad dream.
No matter…
It'll all be over soon.
Now her sobs rack her frail body,
She falls to the floor in pure sorrow.
Sorrow for being born.
No matter…
It'll all be over soon.
As she opens the bottle, with shaking hands.
Her little sister walks to the bathroom door,
Only three years old.
Rubbing her eyes sleepily.
"I had a bad dream."
Looking at her little sister,
Her little innocent sister,
She sees life in its beauty.
"What's wrong?" asks the little girl,
Staring at the tears in her big sister's eyes.
Big girls aren't supposed to cry.
Are they?
"Nothing, sweetie.
What was your bad dream about?"
Her sobs fade into a forced smile.
She rubs at her eyes quickly, drying the tears.
"You were gone.
People said you died.
You're not going to die, are you?"
Her tears, once of sorrow, flowed again.
This time they were tears of understanding
Of compassion
Of love
"No, not anytime soon honey
Remember, bad dreams aren't real."
"Good, 'cause I don't like being scared.
Can I sleep with you tonight?
I don't want to be alone anymore."
"Neither do I.
C'mon, let's go back to bed."
