Acne: When teenagers think of skin the first thing they think of is pimples. Pimples are caused by overproduction of oil, irregular shedding of dead skin, or build up of bacteria. There are three types of pimples whiteheads, blackheads, and cysts. Whiteheads are a type of pimple with a white tip, and blackheads are pimples with black tips, cysts are a type of pimple that ruptures deep enough in your skin to cause infections.

Pimples tend to be red raised areas with a white center that become "whiteheads" and then rupture in the hair follicles wall. Thanks to thing such as raises in hormonal level, your period, birth control (in certain cases), pregnancy, and the big S: STRESS; three out of four teenagers have acne, according to the Mayo Clinic Health Information. Don't get worried there are treatments to acne such as lotions, antibiotics, oral vitamin A, oral contraceptives, cosmetic surgery, and if none of those work you can go to the doctor for a check up.

Although there is no cure for acne, you can control it with normal behavior. Since overall over-the-counter acne lotions can only help mild cases you can do the things your mother has taught you to do since you were little. "There is no treatment that can substitute good and basic skin care"' your mother would say, well she was right. Simple things such as washing your face twice a day with soaps or cleansers. Avoiding irritants can help, although there is no scientific proof that certain foods can aggravate your alcne, some people's skin is sensitive to changes in the diet, which can irritate your acne. Stress may also play a role in acne outbreaks. If you find yourself breaking out after stressful moments then stop STRESSIN'. Last but not least DON'T PICK YOUR PIMPLES and watch what touches your face.

Exercise: Since teenagers are often extremely conscience of their skin and weight, here is a way to fix both: EXERCISE! Exercise makes your immune system stronger and makes the function of every organ in your body better, which in turn brings vitality to your skin. Exercise provides your skin with the power to release toxin and receive nutrients. Since stress is bad for the skin, and exercise reduces stress: EXERCISE! Like I said before exercise provides oxygen, which is critical to the function of the body's vital organs. Also, remember proper exercise should increase fat utilization, strength, endurance, flexibility, and confidence. Last but not least, don't forget to smile, happiness finds its way to your face.

Sun Protection: According to The Skin Lady's first principle of skin health; "The sun is your skins greatest enemy. Unless you protect your skin from the sun no treatment, no moisturizer, no skin care routine and no surgery will help you!" Since we know the sun damages our skin, now its time to know what about the sun damages our skin. The things that damage our skin are free radicals, these tear our skin apart, and there is no need to add other free radicals to that such as smoking, alcohol, and stress.

There are certain rays in the sun that cause things such as wrinkles and cancer. These rays are UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are rays that cause wrinkles and cancer. Since UVA rays follow a wavy line from the sun, and they are a danger from dawn to dusk, they may go through things such as clouds, plastic, snowstorms, glass, and even through your own clothing. On the other hand UVB's, which are the most common talked about rays, burn the skin and they too also cause cancer. These rays follow a direct line from the sun meaning you can easily dodge them by wearing sun block, or being in the shade, or under an umbrella.

Now about SPF ( or Sun Protection Factor) first SPF means that you will get burned after the amount of time that's on the bottle. For example, if the bottle says SPF 15 it means you can stay in the sun 15 times longer. Unfortunately most sun blocks on the market do not contain Parsol, which is what protects our skin from UVA rays. So whenever you go shopping read the label and try to find a sun block that contains Parsol.

A myth that is often spread is that people of color are immune to the sun because of the color in their skin.....FALSE!!!!! Sorry that's not true people of color are subject to the same abuse from the sun as anyone else.

Water: First of all, your body is made up of 70 % water. You need to drink between 8 to 10 8-ounce glasses of water daily. Water is necessary for everything in your body to function correctly even your skin. When you don't drink water, your body has to work extremely hard to get water out of other things you eat and drink. Since some of us already drink the required amount of water, here are some suggestions for those that haven't been able to grasp the concept of drinking all that water......

  1. Start out small. ( Maybe 2 to 3 glasses daily)
  2. Ask yourself do you want to drink the water?
  3. If your answer is yes, then focus and try your best to reach your goal.
  4. If you keep water with you at all times it will be much easier to drink all the water you need.
  5. Then once you have succeeded sit back and reap the benefits!

On a personal note...We would like to thank our parents, friends, family, loved ones, and support groups for their undying love and support. Also, I (Rachel) would like to thank Mrs. Barries, Ms. Yamada, and the entire Dance Company at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Md for expanding my mind and experience, and I (Meagan) would like to thank Mr. Ronald Edmonds at Suitland High School in Forestville, Maryland for everything he has done for me and all of the B.A.S.U. family. WE LOVE YOU ALL!!!
