Title Suicide - I overhead my sister talking to her friends about overdosing on Advil. How can I help?

~Your parents are getting a divorce, your best friend just Kissed the boy that you had a crush on since third grade, and You’re a high school misfit. These are just some problems that teens try to solve with suicide.

Teenage suicide is the self killing of a teenager. Suicide is the third-leading cause of death among teens between the ages of 15 and 24 years old. Suicide killings are different from boys and girls. Females think about and attempt suicide twice as much as boys. Females tend to commit suicide by overdosing or cutting themselves. Males die by suicide about four times as much as girls. Males tend to use methods such as firearms, hangings, or jumping from heights. There are more male suicides than female suicides.  

Teens attempt suicide to escape a problem that they don't want to deal with. However, some teens don't wish to die. They do it to express emotional pain. Suicide attempts are normally a cry for help. Middle age adolescents (from 13 to 16 years of age) may turn to drugs and alcohol to help them cope with their problems. When that's not enough they turn to self killings. What many adolescents fail to realize is that they themselves have power. They have the power to create their lives and change it for the better.   

If a teen ever has a problem they should know that there is always someone to talk to. For example, if you can't talk to your parents, friends, or any other adult you trust, then you could talk to a school counselor or a therapist (who are meant to keep the conversations confidential). You can also join or even start a support group, talking about the issues of teenage suicide. Everyone has problems and believe it or not but that guy at the bus stop, or the girl walking her dog, is probably going through what you are going through.  

Warning Signs that someone is thinking about suicide:  

~Talking about death in general.

~Giving away of possessions.

~Not wanting to be with friends or family.

~Having self destructive behavior (taking drugs or cutting for example) 

How you can help yourself:  

~Talk to someone about your problem (don't keep it bottled in).

~Make friends who are caring and positive people.

~Join Support groups.

~Talk to therapist, psychologist, or counselor.
